Inducted into the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) IPL Team in 2011, Hilfenhaus failed to make it to the IPL that season due to an injury. He also missed the first part of IPL 2012 due to national commitments but when he did join the Super Kings midway through the event, Hilfenhaus emerged as their best bowler. He played a vital role in Chennai Super Kings making it to the IPL final for the fourth time in 2012.

He missed IPL 2013 but was bought in players auction for IPL 2014 by Chennai Super Kings for Rs. 1 Crore.
