Having won the toss, Mumbai Indians elected to bat first but on a high scoring wicket they managed to post a total of 139/5 in their 20 overs. Captain Rohit Sharma was the top scorer with unbeaten 39 runs of 30 balls.
For Chennai Super Kings, Ravindra Jadeja took three wickets while R Ashwin and Dwayne Bravo took one wicket each.

In reply, chasing this small total Chennai Super Kings had a lucky start with Michael Hussey being dropped thrice in the first over of the match on three successive balls by Kieron Pollard, but still they got bowled for 79 runs in 15.2 overs, their lowest total in IPL history. Michael Hussey was top scorer with 22 runs of 26 balls.
For Mumbai Indians, Mitchell Johnson and Pragyan Ojha took three wickets each, Lasith Malinga took two wickets while Paway Suyal and Harbhajan Singh took one wicket each.
