Having won the toss at the PCA Stadium in Mohali, Rajasthan Royals elected to field first.
Kings XI Punjab had a good start with Virender Sehwag firing but he got out after scoring 18 runs of 8 balls. Manan Vohra made a quick fire 25 and Shaun Marsh made 40 runs of 35 balls. There good contributions by Wriddhiman Saha, David Miller and George Bailey as well all making quick 25 – 30 runs to help Punjab reach a total of 179/4 in their 20 overs.

For Rajasthan Royals, Vikramjeet Malik, James Faulkner and Rahul Tewatia picked up one wicket each.
Chasing this challenging total Rajasthan Royals lost the wicket of Karun Nair early but Ajinka Rahane played well with Sanju Samson and had a good partnership but then Rishi Dhawan took two wickets in two balls dismissing Ajinkya Rahane and Shane Watson to put Rajasthan under pressure. Soon they lost Stuart Binny and Sanju Samson and were 83/5 in 13th over. Brad Hodge made a quickfire 31 of just 18 balls but once he got out it was all over. In the end James Faulkner hit few sixes to ensue that Rajasthan Royals dont loose the match by a big marin so that their net runrate does not get much affected. Rajasthan Royals ended their innings on 163/8 loosing the match by 16 runs.
For Kings XI Punjab, Akshar Patel picked up three wickets, Rishi Dhawan and Karanveer Singh picked up two wickets each while Lakshmipathy Balaji picked up one wicket.
This defeat of Rajasthan Royals helped Mumbai Indians and SunRisers Hyderabad to stay alive in the tournament.
With this win, KXIP have secured the top place in the standings!
