He played the first three seasons of IPL for Mumbai Indians. In the players auction for IPL 2011, he was bought by the Royal Challengers Bangalore team for US $900,000. Since then he had been playing for the Royal Challengers Bangalore team.

In Players Auction for IPL 2014, Mumbai Indians bought Zaheer Khan for Rs. 2.6 Crore.
